A Community Strong

When people come together, we change the world. I have been on this voyage of trying to explain poverty; the struggles met by those and their families that live it; and ways to better understand and assist. Breaking down this epidemic is one were others have lifted me up and assisted me in breaking through barriers as well as uplifting other’s lives and giving them hope.

I started the “Easter Baskets for the Kids,” because I recognize poverty does not show leniency. During the Christmas season, many people open up their hearts and arms to assist others. However, we also need to recognize that many are still struggling and of those, most importantly, their children are going through it as well. Personally, I have experienced the “effects” from living in poverty – it can be a personal hell – we really don’t know what they may be going through.

Thank you to those that have assisted me in this venture! This is your story – one where people from all over the United States of America have answered the call to help others. This is their why.

Sarah Beckman

“My why: Growing up during the pandemic/economic crisis has to be so hard for kids right now – all the more reason why it’s so important for their community to provide them smiles wherever we can.”

Beau Taylor

“I like helping other kids.”

Danielle Weld

“We chose to donate items for children’s Easter baskets because we were able and gladly willing to do so. It is important to give and help out, it doesn’t matter if it may be something big or small – I can guarantee it will have a positive and lasting affect on others . When the community can join together and provide help in any time of need , it shows how much we can accomplish and I think it shines a little light on all the resources available within the community- including individuals who want to just give back in some way.”

Mrs. State College International

“As a child I experienced poverty first hand. I understand the obstacles children are up against and I want to change their narrative. Bringing people together to help others – makes me happy. I also want others to recognize poverty doesn’t discriminate and with the pandemic many families are now struggling as they have never been before.”

Community is the feeling and belonging to something bigger than ourselves. Communities gives me courage to move past the negatives and be a part of all things positive. The sense of belonging allows one to feel safe, secure and accepted. The community always opens doors to connect us to others. It helps us to become aware of others needs and to reach out a helping hand when and where it is needed. I feel that everyone needs to have the sense of community in their lives. It is an important part of who we are.

Leah & Hockenberry Family

My husband and I grew up in homes that did not have a lot of money. He and I are fortunate enough to have well-paying jobs with the ability to give our children everything they need and more. Therefor every opportunity we get to help out those less fortunate than us we do so. I also like to set a good example for our boys so they can be more appreciative for the things they do have and understand that not everyone is as lucky as them and that we should always help those less fortunate then us.

I didn’t get everyone to share their stories – but I personally want to thank everyone that helped me and the children that the Salvation Army serves. #salvationarmy
